Leisure airline Sunwing Airlines has added Tobago to its list of winter destinations with service beginning in late December 2018.
The smaller of the two islands that make up Trinidad and Tobago will receive weekly service on Thursdays from December 20, 2018 to April 18, 2019. It is unclear still as to whether the route will be serviced by their Boeing 737-800 or MAX 8.
President of Tour Operations for Sunwing, Andrew Dawson, commented on the news saying, “We are delighted to be offering our customers even more choice from Toronto this winter with the addition of the island of Tobago. Offering beach relaxation, warm Caribbean hospitality and a wide range of tours and excursions to experience, we’re sure that Tobago will prove to be a popular addition to our roster.”
“Travellers departing from Toronto Pearson have a new choice for their travels to the south this winter, with Sunwing’s weekly service to the island of Tobago,” said Kim Stangeby, Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer, Greater Toronto Airports Authority. “This new destination provides convenient nonstop access to leisure travel options in the area and further enhances the network of more than 170 destinations passengers can reach with direct service from Toronto Pearson.”
Secretary for Tourism, Culture and Transportation for Tobago, Nadine Stewart-Phillips, also celebrated the new addition, “The Tobago House of Assembly welcomes Sunwing to Tobago. Sunwing’s flight and hotel package offering will significantly enhance our efforts in tourism at all levels.”
As with other leisure carrier, vacationers can book package deals at a reduced cost with complimentary options like free airport transfer and one free checked bag (50 lbs/23 kgs) per passenger. The airline partnered with a number of hotels, including to soon to be opened Starfish Tobago Resort, as well as the Magdalena Grand Beach and Golf Resort.
We did a search for a package from December 20-27, 2018 and found packages as low as CAD 1,650/USD 1,260 with some of the three star hotels.
If you are looking for just a cheap flight, round trip tickets were priced at CAD 715/USD 546 USD for a flight from December 20th to 27th. Note that passenger taking the flight-only option will be required to pay an additional CAD 21 per segment if they choose to fly with one checked bag.
The airline will offer a weekly direct flight, departing Toronto (YYZ) at 8:00 AM as flight WG173, with an expected arrival time in Tobago (TAB) at 2:35 PM. Factoring in for daylight savings (for most of the season), the flight time should be 5 hours and 35 minutes. The return flight (WG174) will depart Tobago at 3:45 PM local time and arrive in Toronto at 8:30 PM local time, with an expected flight time of 5 hours and 45 minutes.
