Social media has its good and bad sides. I’ve always felt that while there are some benefits, there are many aspects of your life which you should keep offline for your own safety and sanity.

One Tiktok “influencer” learnt the hard way that it’s not always a good idea to share your airline ticket online. @meld460 posted a video talking about how her flight from Cairns (CNS) to Singapore (SIN) was canceled shortly after she shared a previous video with her ticket in the frame.

She said she was excited to share the news of her upcoming trip with her followers, but she later received an email notifying her that a refund was being processed for the flight. At first, she thought it was as a result of flight itself being canceled, but when she checked the amount returned, it was $400 short of what was originally paid.

After calling Qantas, the agent confirmed that someone used her ticket reference information to pull up her booking online and cancel the flight. Originally it was thought that someone called in, but after further investigation, the Qantas agent could see that it was done online (noted in a follow up video).

Qantas was forgiving given the circumstances, and refunded the remaining $400, and allowed her to rebook a new ticket.

Tickets contain critical flight details including your name, flight details and reference number, and should never be shared publicly, let alone on social media. There also bar or QR codes which can easily be scanned even if the printed information is not readable. While it’s not easy to make changes to tickets without providing the credit or debit card used for the booking, canceling a ticket is much easier.
