Air France and KLM have partnered with eSIM provider Kolet, offering travelers discounted rates on roaming data-only plans across more than 190 countries.
An eSIM (short for embedded SIM) is a digital SIM built into a device, allowing users to activate cellular plans without needing a physical SIM card. They come in pretty handy as talk and data plans can be bought online and activated immediately.
eSIMs are especially useful if you’re traveling abroad as there is no need to worry about buying a physical sim. In most cases, you just have to download an app prior to travel, buy your desired plan and activate it once you get to the country you’re traveling to.
Kolet is one of many brands offering these services, and through a partnership with Air France and KLM, they are offering discounted rates on data plans, and are even giving first time buyers the option of 1GB of free data to trial over a two day period with no strings attached.
What’s most surprising is that you don’t even need to prove your travel dates in order to qualify for the free or discounted data plans. Once you book via the website portal or using the code AFKLDATA in the Kolet app, you’ll immediately qualify for the discount.
Flying Blue members can also earn 10 miles per €1 spent in the app once you enter your frequent flyer number, and 250 miles if they refer someone else.
Does this mean that Kolet is the best option? Maybe not. Depending on which country you travel to, their rates may not be the best (even with the discount), and it’s always advised that you weigh competing options. However if you’re in a bind and need quick access to data, there is still that 1GB 2-day pass.
Travelers with eSIM-compatible devices should also make sure they are not carrier-locked as Kolet requires that the eSIM option be carrier-free.
