KLM has started service to Guyana via St. Maarten. Unlike KLM’s other Caribbean routes which are usually operated by Airbus A330s, passengers on this new flight will be benefit from Boeing 787-9 service.

In a statement, KLM said:

“Georgetown is the capital and largest city of Guyana. Guyana is a rare place where you can still find nature in its original form, with coastal land, rainforest and savannahs. It also has a strong business traffic flow.”

The flight will be operated twice weekly on Wednesdays and Saturdays in a triangular manner, departing Amsterdam (AMS), stopping first in St. Maarten (SXM), then continuing onto Georgetown (GEO) before returning to Amsterdam.

What’s also interesting is that the flight number for this route is KL789.

Today’s new service was celebrated the night before at the Cara Lodge Hotel in Georgetown. At the event, President Dr Irfaan Ali welcomed the additional service, saying that the partnership is just the first step in plans to turn Guyana into a transit hub, connecting traffic between North America, Europe and South America.

Besides Guyana, KLM plans to re-enter the Barbados (BGI) market, with seasonal 787-9 service starting in October 2025. The flight will be operated three times weekly, and will also route via St. Maarten in a similar triangular manner like the Georgetown flight.

“Barbados is one of the largest underserved markets in the Caribbean from the Netherlands, providing travelers with a sunny destination during the winter months. Bridgetown is renowned for its stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters, and rich culture. With this flight combination, KLM is catering to the growing demand for both tourist and business destinations in the Caribbean. KLM previously operated flights to Bridgetown in the winter seasons of 2021 and 2022.”

Unfortunately, flights to Trinidad and the ABC islands will still be limited to Airbus A330 service. This may change in the future as KLM has placed an order for 50 Airbus A350-family aircraft to replace their older Boeing 777s and Airbus A330-200s.
