While Airlines Fly To Tulum International Airport

If you haven’t heard by now, Mexico’s Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport a.k.a. Tulum International Airport commenced commercial operations on December 1, 2023.

Tulum International Airport was built as a secondary gateway to the Riviera Maya district and Yucatan Peninsula, and is expected to relieve some of the overcrowding at Cancun International Airport.

Currently, only three domestic airlines operate out of Tulum, including Aeromexico Connect, Viva Aerobus and most recently, Mexicana. From the end of March 2024, the new airport will see service from various U.S. and Canadian carriers, with the first flights arriving on March 28.

In this article, we will cover the details of carriers currently flying in, as well as those expected to start service later this year.

Current Airlines Flying To/From Tulum

Aeromexico Connect

Aeromexico Connect currently operates once daily service from Mexico City (MEX) with their Embraer E190s (even though they may throw in the oddball main line Aeromexico Boeing 737). From January 8, service will double up to 2x daily flights.

The Monterrey low-cost carrier has spread its wings, adding connectivity from four cities, with a fifth starting in March 2024 as follows:

  • Tijuana (TIJ) – Tulum – Sundays
  • Monterrey (MTY) – Tulum – Daily Service
  • Guadalajara (GDL) – Tulum – Sundays, Mondays, Fridays
  • Mexico City (MEX) – Tulum – Daily Service
  • Mexico City Santa Lucia (NLU) – Tulum – Daily Service starting from March 1, 2024

Mexicana de Aviacion

After shutting down in 2010, the Mexicana brand is back in the skies under the management of the Mexican Ministry of Defense. Operating out of the newly built Felipe Ángeles International Airport (NLU) in Santa Lucia, Mexicana is offering flights to Tulum on Sundays, Mondays and Fridays.

This service will be operated with their Boeing 737-800, but this may change in time as the airline has long term plans to operate Embraer E-Jets, Airbus A320s and possibly Boeing 737 MAX 8s.

Delta Air Lines adding flights from Atlanta from March 28, 2024

Delta will be one of the three international airlines to touch down on March 28, operating daily flights from Atlanta with a Boeing 737-800.

“Delta is uniquely positioned to give customers convenient and direct access from the U.S. to Tulum, a premium leisure destination known for its boutique hotels, Mayan ruins and eco-friendly spirit,” said S.V.P. of Network Planning Joe Esposito. “We know Tulum-bound customers will enjoy the elevated experience Delta consistently offers – and now without a two-hour drive from Cancun – as we grow our footprint in Mexico and throughout the Yucatan region.”

Without connectivity there is no tourism, and the two new routes to the new Tulum International Airport, which is ready to receive five million passengers, will boost the arrival of tourists from our second most important source market for international tourists,” stated Lic. Miguel Torruco Marqués, Secretario de Turismo, Mexico.
