American Airlines has announced plans to resume service to Caracas, Venezuela (CCS), making it seven years since they stopped operations between the two countries in 2019.
In a very brief statement, the airline noted its entry in 1987, serving as one of the largest carriers in the country before pausing flights in 2019. They said:
“We have a more than 30-year history connecting Venezolanos to the U.S., and we are ready to renew that incredible relationship,” said Nat Pieper, American’s Chief Commercial Officer. “By restarting service to Venezuela, American will offer customers the opportunity to reunite with families and create new business and commerce with the United States.”
In May 2019, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and Department of Transportation ordered U.S. carriers to discontinue operations to the South American country following growing security and political instability between the two nations.
American Airlines has not provided any further details other than that they are working with the relevant authorities to iron out all necessary permissions and security assessments prior to resuming service.
American Airlines will the first out of the gate to resume service, but all other U.S. airlines have been cleared to start or resume flights once the necessary details are worked out. This announcement came shortly after President Trump instructed federal agencies in Thursday’s cabinet meeting to open up “all commercial airspace” over the country.
This comes just four weeks after then Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife were captured by United States forces on January 3, 2026.
The Federal Aviation Administration has also discontinued advisory NOTAMs related four airspaces including Venezuela, Curacao, Piarco and San Juan (Puerto Rico) shortly after Trump’s announcement.
