After just a few weeks short of 34 years in business (under the Spirit name), Spirit Airlines officially ceased operations on May 2, 2026 at 3AM Eastern Time, and will be liquidated as ultra-low-cost carrier was unable to secure the necessary funding to continue operations.

In a brief statement on their website, they said:

“It is with great disappointment that on May 2, 2026, Spirit Airlines started an orderly wind-down of our operations, effective immediately. To our Guests: all flights have been cancelled, and customer service is no longer available. We are proud of the impact of our ultra-low-cost model on the industry over the last 34 years and had hoped to serve our Guests for many years to come.”

Following the start of the pandemic, Spirit Airlines has posted losses spanning in the millions of dollars, with those numbers growing into the billions in the last two years. They lost $1.23 and $2.76 billion in 2024 and 2025 respectively. The shut down comes at a rough time for the industry, with more than 15,000 people losing their jobs as a result.

The ultra-low-cost carrier (ULCC) found itself it a rock and a hard place, dealing with multiple cost factors which simply bled the airline dry over the last six years and change. Besides rising fuel prices and the fallout from the pandemic, Spirit was hit hard due to a combination of overzealous expansion and multiple aircraft being grounded due to engine issues affecting its newer Pratt and Whitney-powered Airbus A320neo-family aircraft.

Spirit operated on slim margins, and with many of their newer aircraft sitting idly by, those slim gains were quickly eroded as a plane on the ground makes no money. In mid-February, Spirit sent a few of its very young A320neos to the scrappers, as the aircraft would have earned them more money being parted out versus being repaired and returned to service.

The failed JetBlue merger also hurt the brand’s image, and even though they were compensated for the inconvenience, it was not enough to save their image as investors continued to feel doubtful about the ULCC’s future. Of course, a major shift towards more premium travel also hurt them, resulting in generally weaker demand low low-cost tickets.

On November 18, 2024, Spirit filed for Chapter 11 under a prearranged restructuring support agreement with bondholders. They used this time to try to deleverage their balance sheet, and emerged from bankruptcy on March 12, 2025 after converting about $795 million of debt into equity, with a plan to raise $350 million in new equity.

Just a few months later, Spirit once again filed for bankruptcy on August 29, 2025, and planned to significantly downsize operations with the hopes of re-emerging from bankruptcy by summer 2026. This would not pan out, and the carrier eventually reached out to the government assistance, with hopes of negotiating a $500 million bailout plan. After talked failed, it was just a matter of time before the carrier ran out of cash.

Spirit’s bondholders realized that the cause was just far too gone, and it felt like throwing money into an open flame. Even if they received government aid, the airline’s business model simply was not sustainable in these economic times with exponentially rising fuel prices and a general shift away from low-cost travel.

A number of U.S. airlines have stepped up, offering assistance to displaced customers and affected staff members. Frontier Airlines said it would slash fares by up to 50% of the base prices on over 100 routes that it served alongside Spirit.

“Frontier currently serves more than 100 routes previously flown by Spirit and will expand further this summer with nine additional routes, plus 15 additional daily flights across 18 former Spirit markets, giving customers more options to rebook their travel plans with confidence while keeping fares low.

“Spirit Airlines played an important role in expanding access to affordable travel and bringing more low fares to more people,” said Bobby Schroeter, Frontier’s Chief Commercial Officer. “We recognize this is a difficult time for their customers and team members. Frontier is making discounted fares available to help people keep their travel plans and maintain access to low fares.”

To support impacted travelers, Frontier is offering up to 50% off base fares* across its network for travel through November 19.

United is also joining the effort, offering a number of one-way capped fares into and out of Spirit destination airports.

Dear Spirit Airlines Customers and Employees:

Today United Airlines launched several new initiatives to help make navigating this uncertain time a little easier.

If you had a ticket booked on Spirit and your flight was canceled, for the next two weeks you can visit united.com/specialfares to find price-capped, one-way tickets from most cities where Spirit flew, including Atlanta, Chicago, Fort Lauderdale, Houston, Las Vegas, Miami, Newark, New Orleans and Orlando.

Most of these special fares are capped at $199 with limited exceptions, with longer flights priced no higher than $299. To unlock these fares and see additional details, go to united.com/specialfares and give us your Spirit confirmation number, proof of purchase for travel between May 2 – May 16, and your United MileagePlus number. If you’re not a MileagePlus member, you can sign up instantly for free.

American Airlines is also joining in, adding a number of rescue fares to cities it serves that were also part of Spirit’s network.

The American Airlines team is doing everything we can to support Spirit Airlines customers and team members affected by Spirit’s immediate wind-down of operations. We are in touch with the Administration, including the Department of Transportation, on steps we are taking to help mitigate the impact on the communities Spirit serves and the traveling public.

To help customers whose travel may be disrupted, we immediately put rescue fares into place on Spirit routes where American also offers nonstop service. American serves 70 of the 72 airports Spirit presently serves, and 67 of the specific routes Spirit currently operates. We are also reviewing opportunities to add additional capacity — including utilizing larger aircraft and adding flights on critical routes — to support as many affected passengers as possible.
