Qantas Airplane Tears Up Part Of Newly Paved Runway at Perth Airport

A Qantas Airbus A330 departing Perth Airport on Sunday tore up a section of runway that had been recently resurfaced.

On September 15, 2024, Qantas flight QF71 to Singapore departed Perth from Runway 03. During the takeoff roll, thrust from the Airbus A330-200’s engines tore up at least a 65-foot section of the runway that was recently resurfaced. According to authorities, resurfacing works were still in progress, with around 360 feet already completed.

In a video captured by thirteen-year-old plane spotter Mitchell Booth, entire sections of the runway surface were seen being blown away shortly after the heavy Airbus A330 applied takeoff power.

While the Qantas flight left unscathed, that portion of the runway was temporarily closed for emergency repairs. On Monday, authorities initially confirmed that the damaged section was fixed, but later said that more remedial works were necessary. In a statement, they said they were “undertaking additional minor works on its Main Runway following an incident yesterday which caused pavement damage.”

Perth Airport authorities also said:

“The incident impacted around 20 metres of pavement and occurred on a 110-metre section which had just been overlaid as part of a planned renewal of the 3440-metre runway. As this was the first section completed, no other parts of the runway are impacted.

“The Main Runway will continue to be used for departures while the recommended additional works are completed, and the Cross Runway will remain fully operational.

“This mirrors the safe operating model employed yesterday when only one freight service made a diversion.”
