Luxembourg’s Luxair continues to boost its 737 fleet with its latest order of four Boeing 737 MAX 10 jets.
The MAX 10 brings 20% fuel savings over the aircraft types it replaces, and offers the most passenger seating in the entire MAX line. Even though the aircraft has not been certified yet, Luxair plans to configure them with 213 seats with a minimum of 30 inches of seat pitch. According to their numbers, the aircraft will have a range of about 3,100 nautical miles.
“The purchase of the 737-10 is another step towards Luxair positioning for its future with the investment in the latest airplane technology that will support Luxair’s growth plans and the decarbonization of our fleet. There is high commonality between the 737 MAX models, and this allows for significant operational savings for the airline,” said Gilles Feith, Luxair CEO.
On top of this order, Luxair already has four MAX 7s, two additional MAX 10s, four more MAX 8s and two Embraer E195-E2s pending delivery. In terms of their current complement, they operate two MAX 8s, four 737-700NGs, four 737-800NGs and 11 DeHavilland Canada Dash 8 400s.
Where will Luxair’s MAX 10s be deployed?
Luxair has a sizeable presence across Europe, as well as to parts of the Middle East and Africa. With the new MAXs replacing their older Next Generation -700s and -800s, I can only imagine that the MAX 10 may either be utilized on very busy routes where capacity is needed, or on potentially new long haul routes.
Considering the MAX 10’s range, Luxair has the potential to expand its Middle Eastern presence and potentially trial other African markets. There is the potential for a transatlantic run to Canada, but operations may be limited to cities like Halifax, with Quebec City being a stretch. Of course we will have to wait to see what it ultimately will be used for.
