German protestors belonging to the “Last Generation” climate change group spray-painted a private jet at Sylt Airport (GWT) over government inaction regarding climate change policies.
On June 6, the protest group used bolt cutters to enter the ramp at the small airport. Armed with orange paint-filled fire extinguishers, the activists spray-painted a private Cessna Citation CJ1+ registered OE-FMD. They also held up banners saying “Your luxury = our drought” and “Your luxury = our crop failures”. Four of protestors glued their hands to the aircraft, while another glued themself to the asphalt in front of the aircraft.
The group was protesting delays in the implementation of climate protection policies promised by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. In a translated statement, a spokesperson from the “Last Generation” said:
“Mr. Scholz’s tackling [of climate change] consists on the one hand of further delays in matters of climate protection and on the other hand of a plan that the Federal Constitutional Court has described as insufficient. To date, the Scholz government has not presented a concrete plan on how to meet its own climate targets.”
Prior to the protests, Chancellor Scholz promised to crack down on owners of private jets, limousines and superyachts as part of measures to deal with carbon emissions.
The group’s spokesperson further stated:
“You, Mr. Scholz, are Chancellor of the SPD. You campaigned with justice. It is the central value of social democracy. However, if a few are unduly destroying the planet and everyone else suffers, where is the justice?”
An investigation has since been launched to determine the monetary extent of the property damage to the aircraft and airport.
