Following months of uncertainty, Aer Lingus has advised its customers that it plans to discontinue ticket sales for transatlantic flights to and from Manchester for travel from March 31, 2026.
In a statement, the airline said:
“We are currently undergoing a period of uncertainty on transatlantic services at our Manchester base.
“To minimise customer disruption in the event of a closure of the Manchester base, which operates transatlantic flights from Manchester to New York, Orlando and Barbados, Aer Lingus is no longer selling transatlantic flights to/from Manchester for travel from 31 March 2026.
“There is no impact on Aer Lingus or Aer Lingus Regional flights between Manchester and Ireland.”
The carrier has not commented specifically on tickets that would have already been booked for flights from March 31, and beyond, but it does refer customers to the EU Regulation 261/2004 for more information about cancelations. I’m not too familiar with this policy, but with such advance notice given, customers will not be entitled to any form of additional compensation and will only be reimbursed according to the original ticket’s terms and conditions.
Even though the carrier has not confirmed the UK base’s closure, all signs suggest otherwise. Aer Lingus’ UK arm has been going through quite a bit of turmoil over the last few years following lower than anticipated performance.
Operations took a hard hit in October after UK-based cabin crew members went on strike for four days, affecting over 7,500 passengers flying to Barbados, New York and Orlando. Following this event, Aer Lingus’ executive team informed staff members that the Manchester’s long-haul operations were not meeting financial expectations, and suggested that the base could be closed so that resources could be better used elsewhere.
Why was a UK Aer Lingus base formed in the first place?

Aer Lingus is an Irish-based airline, headquartered in Belfast, Northern Ireland. In a bid to build a presence out of the United Kingdom, they registered Aer Lingus (U.K.) Limited as a British airline and wholly owned subsidiary of Aer Lingus.
Being based out the UK rather than Ireland, it would grant them more flexibility to establish a proper long-term base and hire crew members from the United Kingdom. It would also make plans to expands across the pond a bit easier versus if they tried to operate under EU guidelines.
Even though they registered Aer Lingus UK in May 2012, it would become even more relevant as Brexit would first be proposed at the start of 2013. Once it came into effect, Aer Lingus would have had no choice but to register a UK-based airline anyway if they wanted to have a proper base out of the United Kingdom.
Fast forward to 2021, Aer Lingus UK launched operations out of Manchester Airport, flying both regional and transatlantic flights to cities including Belfast, London, Barbados, New York and Orlando. The longer routes were operated with combination of an Airbus A321LR and two Airbus A330-300s, but due to Brexit restrictions, the Manchester-London route was operated by a British Airways wet-lease carrying Aer Lingus flight numbers.
The A321LR did not spend much time under the UK arm, and was returned to Aer Lingus in May 2023, leaving them with two A330s as of January 2026.
The regular customer most likely would not have known about these fine details as tickets were still sold under the Aer Lingus name and website, even though it would state something like “operated by Aer Lingus (U.K.) Limited” in smaller print. The aircraft used by the UK arm looked virtually indistinguishable from a regular Aer Lingus A330, with one obvious difference between the registration. Rather than using an Irish “EI” lettering, the UK Aer Lingus birds use something starting with “G” instead.
