Last year November, Florida state representative Meg Weinberger (R-Palm Beach Gardens) first proposed renaming the Palm Beach International Airport (PBI) after U.S. President Donald Trump.
After an 81-30 vote in the House and 25-11 vote in the Senate, House Bill 919 was approved by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis on March 30, 2026, and gives the state of Florida authority over naming major commercial airports, rather than leaving it primarily to local control. While the bill gives the state authority to rename any major airport under its purview, so far only Palm Beach International Airport (PBI) will be renamed to “President Donald J. Trump International Airport”.
The change which will go into effect on July 1, 2026, will require Federal Aviation Administration updates (e.g. updates to charts and databases) and finalization of rights agreements to use the Trump name.
In a post on X, Donald Trump’s son Eric Trump praised Governor DeSantis and the bill co-sponsors for the change.
“Palm Beach International Airport is now officially…. “President Donald J. Trump International Airport!”
“Proud to have played a small role in making this happen. Huge thanks to @megforflorida, @GovRonDeSantis, @JamesUthmeierFL, and the overwhelming majority in the Florida House!”
After an originally proposed budget of $5.5 million, tax payers are expected to pay closer to $2.75 million after those figures were revised as at March 13, 2026. However, this is not the final number as lawmakers are still working on a finalized budget for the renaming project.
Besides obvious things like signs, things like announcements, emergency messaging, telephone systems, uniforms, markings on vehicles and equipment will also have to be updated.
Airports being renamed after political figures has always been controversial as there will always be a group of people not in support of the change. For instance, Las Vegas’ airport which for the longest while was named after U.S. Senator Pat McCarran was renamed to the Harry Reid International Airport in 2021 because of McCarran’s previous racist, antisemitic and xenophobic commentary.
Even though Reid’s name was much less controversial, there was still opposition, with some arguing that he may not have been deserving of it. Others argued that the cost associated with the renaming was also unnecessary given that that same funding could be used for something more useful.
Why not just keep airports named after the respective areas they are located in rather than associate them with a political figure or party? This isn’t a jab against the president or the Republican party, because there will be people just as unhappy if it were renamed after a Democratic figure.
Besides that, there’s the obvious financing aspect as it costs a lot of money to rebrand and change signs at the airport, for marketing, and so on. Associated airlines coming out of Palm Beach will also have to update their respective marketing and ticketing signage.
What do you think? Is renaming necessary or should it have been kept as is?
