It’s no secret that British Airways plans to retrofit its 12 Airbus A380-800s. In November 2024, the UK carrier unveiled its new Collins Aerospace-built First Class suites which are set to debut on the Airbus A380s and Boeing 777-9s (whenever those arrive). They also noted they would introduced retrofitted A380 cabins by mid-2026.

While they have not officially provided an updated cabin configuration, a leaked seat map on the British Airways’ website has all but confirmed a very premium heavy Airbus A380.

Previously, their quad jets seated a total of 469 passengers with 14 in first class, 97 in the awful Club World ying-yang business class seats. As for premium economy and economy, there are 55 and 303 seats respectively.

The new configuration will heavily favor business class, with the entire upper deck featuring 101 Club Suite business class seats. First class seating will see a slight reduction to 12 seats, located at the very front of the lower deck. Premium Economy (World Traveller Plus) also gets a major boost, going up from 55 to 84 seats, while economy (World Traveller) seats will see a drastic reduction from 303 to 215 seats.

Besides this reconfiguration, the cabins surfaces will also undergo updates, featuring faux wooden flooring near the boarding areas, as well red accents throughout the aircraft similar to what was introduced on their narrowbody fleet.

Regulatory concerns

This update is good news for those looking for a more premium experience, but according to PYOK, the updated cabin may not be delivered on time due to possible regulatory concerns and supply chain issues.

With business class dominating the entire upper deck, there are rumored concerns that flight attendants may be unable to properly restrain any unruly passengers as their restraint kits are only approved for economy and premium economy seats. This would have been fine if business class were on the same deck as economy and/or premium economy, but given they are on two separate decks, this might potentially delay the introduction as regulators would want something specific for the Club Suites.

Their business class cabin may also be delayed as a result of supply chain issues affecting seat manufacturers in general. This has been a problem for quite some time, and isn’t specific to British Airways. PYOK speculates with these potential problems, the new cabin layout could be delayed by years rather than months.
