St. Maarten’s WINAIR has launched flights to Trinidad, adding even more connectivity between the two Caribbean islands.

WINAIR now operates between St. Maarten (SXM) and Trinidad (POS), twice weekly on Sundays and Wednesdays, with their fleet of ATR 72-500s. At the arrival ceremony in Trinidad on Monday, WINAIR’s CEO Hans van de Velde said:

“This milestone is not just about connectivity, but connection. Trinidad and St. Maarten share more than geography, we share cultural rhythm, colonial pasts, family ties, and a resilience that defines us Caribbean people. We learn to adapt, to build and create opportunities when circumstances are ideal.”

Also in attendance was Trinidad and Tobago’s Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation for Trinidad and Tobago, Eli Zakour. He also added:

“This is an important moment for regional air connectivity. It strengthens ties between our two countries. I extend my appreciation to the Minister of Tourism, Civil Aviation and the management and staff of WINAIR for their partnership and commitment to regional activity.”

WINAIR goes up against Caribbean Airlines which currently offers three non-stop flights between the two islands on Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays, with an additional flight on Tuesdays that stops in Barbados (BGI).

As someone flying from Trinidad, I am loving the arrival time into St. Maarten, as it aligns well with hotel check-in times, but there are a few “gotchas” to watch out for when it comes to the fare selection if you’re traveling for more than a couple of days.

For instance, they offer really low fares if you book a “Saver” ticket, but that fare limits you to just a personal item. A “Lite” fare gets you a carry-on bag, while the “Saver” fare allows you to check a bag, but takes away the carry-on option.

If you’re packing on the heavier side, and need both a carry-on and checked bag, you’ll have go with the top-tier “Prime” fare which offers all baggage options, seat selection, and refund and change allowances. Comparing a random day in June, Caribbean Airlines’ ATR 72-600 flight to St. Maarten comes out a bit cheaper while offering similar perks of the Prime fare (with less flexibility on the refund and changes side).

If you’re traveling on the lighter side and don’t mind flying with a checked bag or personal item only, there are savings to gain with WINAIR.

WINAIR has expanded its presence over the last few months. Besides this new route, they also launched flights between Barbados and St. Kitts (SKB) in mid-January 2026, and increased frequency on flights out of Tortola (EIS).

Other new entrants into Trinidad

Trinidad will also see additional service to Barbados as InterCaribbean has finally been cleared to fly to the island. The Turks and Caicos-based carrier will start service on March 8, operating four weekly flights on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

This will also be an ATR 72-600 operated route. They will be going up against Caribbean Airlines which offers up to 20 non-stop flights per week between the two countries.

The Trinidad and Tobago government is also working towards establishing flights to Ghana, and is working with Ethiopian Airlines to offer chartered service between Trinidad and Accra, Ghana (ACC). In a statement to CNC3, Trade, Industry, and Tourism Minister Satyakama Maharaj said that a Ghana Air Services Agreement is being finalized, with the hopes of one day turning Trinidad into a transatlantic hub.
