Florida state representative Meg Weinberger (R-Palm Beach Gardens) has filed a bill proposing to rename Palm Beach International Airport (PBI) after President Donald Trump.
In her X post, Weinberger said, “America’s greatest President deserves an airport that bears his name. That’s why I have filed legislation to rename Palm Beach International Airport as Donald J. Trump International Airport. A tribute to his extraordinary leadership and hometown roots.”
As the bill is still in the draft stages, there isn’t a filing to look up just yet. However, this is not Weinberger’s first proposed bill. In February 2025, she co-sponsored House Bill HB 987, which included a number of honorary designations being assigned to various landmarks. One of those was the renaming of a four mile stretch of Southern Boulevard after President Trump.
“That portion of Southern Boulevard between Kirk Road and S. Ocean Boulevard in Palm Beach County is designated as “President Donald J. Trump Boulevard.”
HB 987 was signed into law in July, with the physical signage eventually being updated once the public works department gets around to it.
Weinberger now wants to have Palm Beach International Airport renamed to the “Donald J. Trump International Airport.” PBI is located a mere 4 miles away from Mar-a-Lago by car.
Airports being renamed after political figures has always been controversial as there will always be a group of people not in support of the change. For instance, Las Vegas’ airport which for the longest while was named after U.S. Senator Pat McCarran was renamed to the Harry Reid International Airport in 2021 because of McCarran’s previous racist, antisemitic and xenophobic commentary.
Even though Reid’s name was much less controversial, there was still opposition, with some arguing that he may not have been deserving of it. Others argued that the cost associated with the renaming was also unnecessary given that that same funding could be used for something more useful.
Why not just keep airports named after the respective areas they are located in rather than associate them with a political figure or party? This isn’t a jab against the president or the Republican party, because there will be people just as unhappy if it were renamed after a Democratic figure.
Besides that, there’s the obvious financing aspect as it costs a lot of money to rebrand and change signs at the airport, for marketing, and so on. Associated airlines coming out of Palm Beach will also have to update their respective marketing and ticketing signage.
What do you think? Should it be renamed or kept the same?
