Here’s another one for the Only In Dade Instagram page.
A thief was recently recorded rummaging through unattended bags at one of the luggage carousels at the Miami International Airport. Baggage theft isn’t anything new given the very relaxed protocols in place (mostly in the domestic areas). Anyone can walk in, grab an unattended bag and leave.
In this case, it was most interesting to see this man casually trying out clothes and shoes as if he were shopping in the mall on a Tuesday afternoon.
In the video, the man is seen going through someone’s toiletries bag, before trying on a pair of jeans. Clearly he thought he was in a shopping center as the person filming the incident noted that he was on his fourth bag.
Some commenters were quick to point out that everyone just stood by and watched, but others highlighted the fact that this thief could be suffering from some sort of mental illness. A more street-smart thief would have simply taken a bag and walked out as if it were theirs, but this man took his time picking and choosing what he wanted. Either he felt he was above the law, or he wasn’t in his best state of mind.
Unfortunately there is no incentive to be a Good Samaritan these days as those intervening sometimes are seriously harmed, or may even lose their lives over low value material possessions. Given that he had supposedly gone through at least four bags, it begs to ask where were the security personnel?
One more reason to travel with carry-on bags only.
